Direct Access: When You Need A Referral In Virginia, And When You Don't
Virginia law allows qualifying physical therapists to evaluate and treat patients without a referral when the requirements of Virginia direct-access law are met. Whether you can begin without a referral can also depend on your current medical care, payer requirements, Medicare status, and clinical findings. This page explains the general framework and when additional provider involvement may still be appropriate.

VIRGINIA STATUTORY FRAMEWORK
Do You Need A Referral To See A Physical Therapist In Virginia?
Often, no. Under Va. Code §54.1-3482, a physical therapist who has completed a qualifying Doctor of Physical Therapy program, or who holds the applicable Board authorization, may evaluate and treat a patient without a referral when the law's conditions are satisfied. Direct access does not eliminate appropriate medical screening, communication, referral, or payer requirements.
The more useful question is whether anything about your situation including current care for the same symptoms, payer requirements, Medicare status, or clinical findings changes what must happen before or during treatment. Dr. Paige follows applicable Virginia law and professional requirements when determining whether direct-access care is appropriate.
This page provides general educational information about Virginia direct access and is not legal advice, insurance-benefit verification, or an individualized determination of eligibility for treatment. Laws, regulations, payer rules, and individual circumstances can change. Divine Physical Therapy applies the requirements in effect at the time care is provided and may recommend referral or medical evaluation when clinically or legally appropriate.
A 60-SECOND SELF-CHECK
Do You Need A Referral? Walk The Three Questions.
Paying Directly?
No referral needed. Virginia direct access applies, and care can start with the discovery call.
Submitting A Superbill?
Contacting your plan first is your responsibility, not Divine Physical Therapy's — a few require a referral as a condition of out-of-network reimbursement, and only your insurer can confirm your plan's specific rules.
On Medicare?
Different framework entirely. Raise it on the discovery call and read the Medicare page before scheduling.
