A Yearly Physical For How You Move

You get your bloodwork checked every year. Your teeth, every six months. The system that actually carries you through your life, muscles, joints, balance, the way you absorb load, usually gets examined only after it fails. The Annual Movement Physical exists to change the order of that sentence.

THE DEFINITION

What Is An Annual Movement Physical?

The Annual Movement Physical is a yearly physical for how you move: a 75-minute, one-on-one assessment of your mobility, strength, balance and load tolerance, performed by a Doctor of Physical Therapy in your home. It finds the limitations most likely to become injuries and turns them into a specific plan for the year ahead.

Nobody searches for this term yet, because it barely exists as a category - which says more about healthcare than about the idea. Annual examinations are standard for every system of the body except the one you move with. HSA and FSA cards may be used when your plan permits, and Dr. Paige brings everything needed to homes across Stafford County and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

THE YEARLY MEASUREMENT YOUR MOVEMENT NEVER GETS

What follows is exactly what happens in the 75 minutes, what it can honestly find, and what happens when it finds something.

THE VISIT

What Happens During The 75 Minutes?

Four things, every year, in the same order: a conversation about the year behind you and the one ahead; a structured battery of measured tests; a plain-language walkthrough of every finding; and a written plan you leave holding.

The tests draw on standardized tools, the Functional Movement Screen, the Y-Balance Test, and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment where a movement reproduces a symptom, alongside strength, balance and load-tolerance measures matched to your actual demands.

Because it happens in your home, the assessment includes the environment you really move in — the stairs you take with laundry, the desk you sit at, the garage gym you train in. A clinic can only simulate that.

The deeper tour of what each test measures lives on the functional movement screening page.

The comparison year over year is the real product. A single screen tells you where you are; the second one tells you which direction you are moving, and that direction - not any single score - is what deserves your attention.

THE RHYTHM

Why A Yearly Rhythm, And Not Just "When Something Hurts"?

Because pain is a late signal. Capacity - strength, balance, joint range, the ability to absorb load - declines quietly for months or years before anything hurts, and by the time a symptom arrives, the finding behind it is old. A yearly measurement catches drift while it is still one or two exercises' worth of work, not a rehabilitation project.

Injury risk is a ratio, not a moment: it rises whenever the demands placed on tissue outrun the capacity that tissue has built. Pain reports the imbalance late. Measurement reports it early - which is the entire argument for measuring on a schedule instead of waiting for the report.

WHO IT’S FOR

Who Is The Annual Movement Physical For?

Adults who intend to stay active for decades and would rather maintain than repair. In practice that means runners and lifters who want their training aimed at the right weakness, parents keeping up with young children, adults past fifty protecting strength and balance while both are still easy to keep, and anyone returning to activity after years away.

For older adults, the yearly measurement quietly does double duty: balance and single-leg control are measured every visit, and when those numbers drift, addressing them early is precisely the work described on our balance and fall prevention page — done years before a fall, when it is easiest.

For athletes in a competitive season, the sport-specific version of this thinking lives under injury prevention for athletes.

THE FINDINGS

What Happens If Something Is Found?

You get an explanation, a priority, and a plan, never a scare. Most findings become two or three targeted exercises folded into training you already do, with a re-check at next year’s physical. Some warrant a short course of focused care, which Dr. Paige provides herself. And some findings are simply normal human asymmetry, and you will be told exactly that, because not every difference deserves an intervention.

“The hardest conversation in this work isn’t a bad finding — it’s a clean screen and a training plan that isn’t clean. When someone’s tests are fine but their log shows volume doubling in three weeks, my honest job is to say: your body isn’t the problem, your plan is. A yearly physical that can’t say that is just a sales funnel with a stopwatch.”

THE QUIET COST

What Does Waiting Actually Cost?

The pattern Dr. Paige sees most is not dramatic injury but slow subtraction: the run that becomes a walk, the ladder that gets avoided, the floor that becomes hard to get up from, each adaptation reasonable, each one shrinking life a little. An annual measurement is how you notice subtraction while it is still reversible. That is the quiet promise of this visit: not that nothing will ever hurt, but that nothing will sneak.

The Annual Movement Physical is the yearly heartbeat of our movement, performance and injury prevention care — the part of the practice built for people who would rather stay ahead of their body than catch up to it.
